A pianist must know about the percussion instrument because the piano is itself a percussion instrument. Definition of a percussion instrument is - the instrument that produces music when struck with something is known as percussion instrument. For those who don’t understand how a piano can be a percussion instrument let me bring their attention to the working of it. There are hammers and strings in a piano and when a key is pressed the hammer strikes the string which sets the string in vibration and result into the music that we hear.
Every percussion instrument has their own style of playing and produces different styles of music. The sound produced by same instrument can vary as per the style in which it is played. When a drummer in a rock band plays, he strikes the drum with force and intensity while a jazz drummer would strike the drums more softly and in a delicate manner.
The notations of music used by the percussion instrument player are different from the ones that are used by the piano player. There are two ways of writing the music that is made by the percussion instrument. First is the pitched way. The notations that are normally used in this style are pretty similar to the one that is used in the piano. The second form of notation is the non pitched way. In this style the notation is much informal then the pitched one. The symbol used for volume and attack in the pitched way of notation of volume and attack are pretty much like the ones that are used in piano. A good musician is one who has good knowledge about his instrument and should also have some knowledge about Music Theory and other instruments.
